It’s a victory to treasure for Alan after a level par round

Alan got off to a terrible start scoring only two points on the first three holes but recovered brilliantly with three birdies on the trot at holes four, five and six.

Six consecutive pars put him in a very strong position before hitting another birdie at the 13th. He must have felt it was all over after hitting another four pars as he took the foot of the pedal with a bogey at the last.

Second place, with 40pts, was taken by Robert McCullough (14) after a count-back. Robert didn’t have a great start either with a no score at the fourth.

Birdies at seven and eight and a further two at 14 and 16 brought him back into contention.

Newly appointed Competition Secretary, Stephen Thornhill (12) was beaten on the count-back and finished third.

Stephen had a very steady round with four pars in the first nine. He finished strong with a birdie and a par on the last two holes but was not enough to secure the runner-up spot.

Craig Tiffen won Best Gross with 66.

ULSTER CUP

The first of the GUI competitions got under way on Sunday when Lambeg were meant to play host to City Of Belfast GC in the Ulster Cup but the fixture had to be reversed due to Aberdelghy being closed after the heavy rain in the early hours of Sunday morning.

That meant some players didn’t get a practice round and, although they lost 4.5 - 2.5, Team Captain Tommy Coulter felt the lads did very well.

Darren McShane had a magnificent seven and six victory while Andy Burrell came home with brilliant four and three win.

Wilbur Lyons was all square after 16 and when he lost the 17th to go one down, it didn’t look good.

However, he won the last hole to gain what could be a very valuable half point.

The return match is at Aberdelghy next Sunday at 1pm.
