The 13-handicapper had a superb send-off with a birdie on the opening hole, but he dropped that shot on the second and then played the other seven first half holes in one over gross, which converted into 23 points.

He opened his second nine with a par which he followed up with a pair of bogeys and three pars, before completing his round with a trio of dropped shots for a further 20 points.

He finished four points clear of second -placed Paul Stevenson (7) who had set the pace from the early morning with 20 points from his opening nine holes, which included a ‘ding’ at the fourth hole, but against that, he had birdies at the second, seventh and ninth and he added a further 19 points on the second nine.

Third nett went to Allan Campbell (24) with 38 points and on a better second nine total of 21 points from Adam Robinson.

Campbell didn’t have the desired start, double-bogeying each of the first three holes, while there was also a ‘ding’ on the par three seventh, but he still managed 17 points and he found his form on the second nine, until dropping two shots at each of the final two holes.

Fourth placed Adam Robinson used his handicap to good effect, scoring regularly as he picked up 19 points from his opening nine holes and despite a birdie at the 10th, he was only able to double his first half tally.

Fifth prize went to Frank O’Boyle (15) who posted 37 points, of which 20 came from the second nine. Sixth nett winner was Chris McCrory (12) also with 37 points, only to lose out on the second nine.

The best gross score came from Gary Black (2) with an overall total of 72 shots.

SPECSAVERS COMPETITION

The Sunday competition was sponsored by Specsavers, Fairhill Centre, and the overall winner was William Owens (20) with 41 points.

Second place went to Paul Darragh (5) with 40 points from a one of one over par gross. Edward Mckee (20) was third nett, while Johnny Robinson (2) had the best gross card with a two over par 70 shots.

LADIES

The competition for the ladies’ section was for the O2 Trophy and the winner was Denise Harper with 36 points, on a better back nine from Lady Captain Elizabeth Anderson.
