Joe takes honours at Silverwood

THIS weeks competition at Silverwood was played in bright sunshine from early morning to the last four ball.

There was a good turn out with 200 players in action and the winner on the day was the evergreen Joe McAvoy playing off a 17 handicap. Joe a long standing member and past captian said it was good to be back in the winners circle again, he had been rebuilding his swing for the last four years and it has paid off at last.

Joe got off to a 3 over start with an 8 at the par 5 first but rallied with a par at the next. He went on to finish the front 9 in 42 strokes, 7 over.

Joe also played the back nine in 42 strokes with the highlight a birdie at the 12th.

Second place went to Bernard McKeever playing of 14 handicap. Bernard had a good front 9 with a solid 38 strokes recording four pars a birdie and four bogeys on the way. The back nine was played in 41 strokes with five pars and four bogeys giving him a nett 67.

Third place went to Brian Brady playing off 14. Brian had 41 stroks on the front and back nine to return a nett 68 on the day.

The best gross this week went to Kevin Munster playing off 3.

Kevin went round the first nine in 34, one under with a birdie coming at the 5th. The back nine was played to par in 37 strokes giving Kevin a 1 under 71 and nett 68.

Fourth place went to Mark Jordan playing off a 10 handicap he had a 1 over 36 on the front 9 and a 42 on the back nine for a gross 78, nett 68.

Fifth place went to Gordon Reilly who did the front 9 in 35 strokes and over the back 9 in 41 strokes for a gross 76 and nett 68.

The senior winner this week was Joseph Kelly who went round the front 9 in 44 strokes and the back 9 in 46 giving him a gross 90 and nett 69

Section winners: 19-28 winner Michael Frazer nett 69; 13-18 winner Eamon Magill nett 69; 0-12 winner Desmond Skelton nett 6.
