Joe takes honours in seniors tourney

THE November Seniors Open competition was held at Lurgan on the first Monday of October.

It had been washed out the week before but this time the weather was favourable and just short of 50 players took part.

The top gent on the day was Joe Dowey with an impressive score of 42 points. This six handicapper was around the course in a gross 70 to bring about this result. Joe had two birdies on his card and they occurred at holes four and eight. On the flip side of the coin he ran up bogeys on holes five and eighteen. Par figures on the other fourteen holes helped him accumulate this worthy six under par return.

Runner-up in this monthly tournament was Aidan Thornbury. On the day this twelve handicapper posted a more than useful tally of 41 points. His opening nine holes comprised five pars and four bogeys. He began the back nine with a birdie at the tenth. Then followed a trio of pars. His concluding five holes included four bogeys and a par at the seventeenth.

The third and final net prize was captured by Tom Lamb. Playing off a twenty six handicap Tom took the spoils with a total of 40 points. Tom had six double bogeys on his card but pars at holes ten and twelve were his keynote holes. However a string a net pars enabled him to post this winning tally of points.

A gross return of 34 points enabled Laurence McGrady to capture the gross award. This five handicapper birdied holes nine and eighteen. However bogeys came his way at holes six, seven, eleven and fourteen. Pars on the rest of the holes guided him safely to this category award.

The other notable scoring came from the following:

39 pts: Artie McGlone.

38 pts: John O’Neill, Joseph Quinn.

37 pts: John Richardson, Mark O’Neill and Eugene Greene.

Meanwhile in the ladies section it was Linda Hamilton who starred with her winning return of 39 points. Ray Gregg was second with a timely effort of 37 points. A birdie on the eleventh and pars at holes three, six, nine and fifteen were Ray’s eminent scores.
