Joe takes the honours in season finale

The Shuttlecock Golf Society wound up their season last Monday at a somewhat damp but nevertheless attractive Moyola Park Golf Club.

Blighted by poor weather throughout the season this was the second attempt at this fixture due to our typical summer weather. And at teeing off time the same theme continued as the heavens opened to leave many greens more than well watered.

Undaunted, however, the members soldiered on as they battled to settle the overall individual places which is based on the best five cards out of the seven outings.

In the Low Section Joe Sloan just nosed out Eugene Laverty on count back as they both finished on 33 points. An unremarkable front nine left Joe on a mere 13 points at the turn. However, the back nine saw a dramatic return to form. Nothing worse than bogey together with the bonus of pars at three consecutive holes from the par five thirteenth gave Joe a handsome total of 20 points along with his first outing win of the season.

Runner up in this section Eugene Laverty lost out with a 16 point total for the back nine. It was the par four fifthteenth which proved his undoing. Aptly named “Purgatory” this hole gave Eugene his only ‘ding’ of the day. An excellent “Two” at the picturesque seventeenth, but unfortunately with his second ball, just added to the frustration.

In the High Section Chris Platt recorded his second win of the season scoring 31 points. Whilst all around him floundered Chris made up for his ‘ding’ at the par four third hole with a four pointer at the par four eighth to record an outward total of 14 points. Steady scoring over the back nine with just two single pointers resulted in a very respectable 17 point total for the homeward stretch.

Runner up in this section was, surprisingly, Ken Little with a score of just 25 points. Apart from two pars at the par three twelth and sixteenth, ‘dings’ and single pointers were conspicuous by their presence throughout the round. An indication perhaps of the trials and tribulations suffered by the other members.

For only the second time this season no ‘Twos’ were recorded. A draw at the Annual Dinner on October 13th will decide the winners of the unclaimed £25.

Members are asked to return their forms with numbers attending the dinner to Noel Armstrong at 3 Hopefield Mews, Portrush, BT56 8GS.
