John back in the winner’s circle

The winner of the trophy was fifteen handicapper John McComb. This player took the honours with the best return of 39 points.

John is no stranger to the winning circle as this was his third success this year. Two disciplined nines were the key to this win. A string of pars at holes two, five, seven and eight formed the backbone of the opening nine. On the homeward run a birdie at the thirteenth and pars on the closing two holes of play were his critical scores. Whilst he incurred double bogeys on holes three and sixteen his generally solid play elevated him into top spot.

Runner up with an equally competent score of 39 points was Des Gregg. Playing off a 13 handicap Des had a particularly strong outward nine.

A run of pars at holes one, two, five, six and eight spearheaded this challenge. A birdie on the ninth added to this forceful play. In the middle of the round double bogeys at holes six, seven and fifteen raised a few mental issues. However he erased some of the demons with a birdie and a par on the final two holes of play.

The third net prize went to Dermot Lavery with the last total of 39 points. This 11 handicapper had five pars on the front side. A trio of bogeys on holes five, six and eight took their toll. Around the turn he had a splendid run of figures comprising a birdie on the ninth, a par on the tenth and another birdie on the twelfth. Par figures on holes thirteen and fifteen were his other feature scores.

A no-return on the eighteenth cost him the outright success.

A tally of 34 gross points secured Brian Scullion the weekly gross prize. This three handicapper was generally well on top of matters over the eighteen holes. Birdies came his way at holes three, four and twelve. On the other hand he dropped strokes on holes six, eleven and thirteen. A double bogey on the fourteenth was disappointing. Still he negotiated par figures on the rest of the holes to claim the category prize. He managed to beat his four-ball opponent Gary Clarke by a solitary point.

In the low handicap division seven golfers weighed in with under par returns. Paul McConaghy grabbed the laurels with his tally of 38 points. The middle section had two golfers with under par scores of 37 points. On the count back Raymond McCrory took the spoils.

In the high section only one golfer achieved an under par return. Colin P Darling attained the feat and he duly captured up the sectional award with 37 points.
