John wins Easter Cup

The only downside were the greens that had been spiked and sanded. This, however, did not prevent some very high scores being posted from the 150 entrants who signed in.

The overall winner was John Marley with a score of 43 points. John playing off an eleven handicap, started his round with a par and this was followed by two bogeys.

He then settled into his game and shot six straight pars in a row to finish off the front nine on 21 points. This form continued into the back nine with a further five pars three bogeys and a very lucky birdie at the sixteenth.

His playing partners said the birdie was a mere fluke. John maintains that he did aim for the pitch mark that was responsible for directing the ball into the hole. Fluke or no fluke the points total for his efforts amounted to 22 and gave him the number one spot with his combined total of 43 points.

Philip McConville (11) took second place with 42 points. Philip went through the front nine in level par, which converted to a magnificent 23 points.

On the back nine he shot another four pars and a birdie, but double bogeys at the fifteenth and eighteenth holes were the undoing of a very good score and probably caused him to lose out on the top spot.

The next three places were all tied on 41 points. Matthew Madden (8) then was awarded third place on a countback. Three birdies and two pars on the front nine made up the bulk of his 21 points total.

Another five pars and a birdie at the sixteenth helped boost his total to 20 points for the back nine.

Brendan Gorman (4) won the gross prize when he returned 35 gross points. Brendan went through the front nine in level par and was still on level par standing on the eighteenth tee box. Unfortunately his day was spoiled somewhat when he bogeyed the last.

Connor Haddock (21) won fourth place with 41 points. Connor returned 21 points on the front nine and 20 points on the back nine, but it was his failure to score any points on the final hole that prevented him from finishing a lot higher on the leader board.

Brian Lappin (16) also returned 41 points to win fifth spot. On the front nine he shot 21 points to set himself up with a chance of winning the first cup of the year. Unfortunately his 20 points on the back just fell short of the mark this time around.

John McConville won the seniors prize with 39 points. This was John’s first win of the year and his points total was compiled from 18 points on the front nine and 21 points on the back nine.

Caolan McCann (5) took the junior prize with 34 points

The section winners were as follows, 0-12 Prakash Vyas on 40 points, 13-18 Laurence O’Connor on 38 points and 19-28 Joe Toland on 40 points.

There were only five two’s recorded in this competition.

Results from Stableford competition held on Saturday, March 31 were as follows.

1st Conall Kerr 44 points, 2nd Kevin Munster 42 points, 3rd David Mason 42 points, 4th Patrick McKeown 40 points, 5th John Carson 40 points.

Gross Prize went to Darren McCabe with 32 gross points.

This Saturday will see the first club stroke competition of the year.
