John wins Memorial Salver

LAST Friday evening the past captains of Banbridge Golf Club played for the W.E. Holton Memorial Salver.

This competition was initiated 25 years ago by the then captain, Tom Ferris.

It is always a fun occasion. The 14 holes golf competition is followed by a photo call and a sumptuous meal. Then the reminiscing starts and that is most enjoyable.

Cathal O’Neill, the immediate past captain, had everything organised to perfection. He couldn’t do anything about the condition of the course, which was extremely wet underfoot.

John Parkes, the club president, was not perturbed by the damp conditions and he won the Salver with 31 points. His playing partner, Bertie Shaw, was runner-up with 30 points. This was John’s third victory in this competition.

Susan Holton and Jane Boyce, daughters of the late Teddy Holton, presented the Salver to a delighted John Parkes.
