JONATHAN BATTLES TO CUP WIN AT THE ‘ROCK

Jonathan Todd, playing off six, battled the weather and came out with his name on the William Boyd Memorial Cup by scoring 35 points.

He had a lacklustre front nine with just one birdie, a four on the long Railway hole, and turned with just 15 points on the card. The inward nine was a completely different story as Jonathan went up several gears starting back with five fours, one of which was another birdie. Just one shot was dropped to par over the closing four and Jonathan was able to clock up 20 more points to get to his total of 35.

That back nine was crucial as David West also scored 35 but he had 19 back to lose out on the tie break. David’s good two at the Leg o’ Mutton kept his spirits up but two blanks at seven and eight meant a mediocre 16 points for the 20 handicapper. On the inward nine David scored well when he did score, blanks appeared again at fourteen and at the last. In between he had a couple of four pointers notably for his birdy four at the long eleventh.

However 19 points back meant second place for David. Another David, Turner this time, won the Best Gross on 34 points. He was out in 37 shots with birdies logged at the long fifth and the par four sixth and after the turn he hit another birdy four at eleven. David ended the back nine on two over par 39 and 76 overall.

Best Oldie of the day was Brendan Mullan who scored 32 points off his mark of 21. Four and nine were blanked in an outward nine of 15 points. Seventeen went the same way as he carded another 17 for his 32 total. Low Section topper was Ivor Platt with 35 points from his handicap of ten. His three over par front nine gave him a good 20 points and the back nine got off to a good start with eight points coming from the first three holes.

After a couple of single pointers Ivor blanked the short sixteenth, all of this meant a return of 15 from the inward nine but he got the low Section top prize. The High Section went to 34 point scorer Alastair Moore, a seventeen handicapper. A good birdie four at the Railway hole balanced up his blank at fourth as he logged 17 points out. His steady back nine gave him another 17 to claim his prize with.
