Jonathan Burns shines in the sun to win the Ken Wylie Memorial

The competition last Saturday at Banbridge Golf Club was the Ken Wylie Memorial and it turned out to be a perfect day for golf. The weather was beautiful and the course was in great shape.

Jonathan Burns (5), one of the most naturally gifted players in the club, went round in 68 shots, one under par gross, and he won the competition with 42 stableford points. Jonathan plays no golf during the winter months, concentrating on his hockey. But, when the hockey season is over, he strolls out to the first tee and proceeds to play as if he was never away. Very few golfers can do that.

P.J.Johnston (14), who plays golf all the year round and plays very well, was runner-up with 41 points.

Paul Magennis (5), the hero of the Senior Cowdy victory over Spa two days earlier, won the best gross prize with a 71.

Tony Ewbanks (12) was the best senior player on the day with 39 points.

Neil Comiskey (11) won the 0-12 section with 40 points. Jonathan Shannon (5) was runner-up with 39 points.

Malcolm Hanna (13) won the 13-17 section with 41 points. Shane Crossan (15) was the runner-up with 41 points.

Norman Doak (18) won the high section (18+) with 41 points and Gary Hazley (18) was the runner-up with 39 points.

There are always a number of near misses. Nigel Bryson (8), Shane Rooney (7) and Adam McGregor (10) all had 39 points.

Alan Caughey (11), Andrew Quinn (5) and Garreth Moody (7) each had 38 points.

But the star player of the day was Jonathan Burns and he becomes the lowest handicap winner this year. A class act, no doubt!
