Jonathan Shannon wins the Coburn Cup in style

At the end of the day, the name on top of the leaderboard was Jonathan Shannon, playing off a handicap of 6, with 42 points.

Jonathan played the 18 holes in level par gross 69, thanks to birdies at the 2nd, 6th and 7th. He had a lovely finish to his round, 7 straight pars.

Brian Boyd (13) was runner-up, also with 42 points. He looked a certain winner going into the last four holes but he bogeyed 15, 16 and 18 and his chance of glory was gone. Still, second place is no mean achievement.

Young Jamie Thompson (10) won the low section (0-12) with 41 points and Cathal O’Neill (11) was second with 40 points.

Terry Malcolmson (16) won the middle section (13-17) with 39 points.

John J. Lennon (13), Vaughan Lamont (14), Ivan Rushe (13) and Robert Clydesdale (17) also had 39 points in this section. John J. was placed second on countback.

Stanley Dickson (21) won the high section with 39 points and Colin McKinney (18) was second with 37 points.

Damian Weir (5) won the best gross prize, thanks to a level par 69. The final prize, for the best senior player, went to Gary McCormick (11) with 40 points.

There are always one or two hard luck stories.

Paul Magennis (5) had 40 points, Joshua Crory (7), Alan McVey (5) and Tom Mulholland (8) each had 39 points and all went away empty-handed. Their only consolation is that they played a brilliant round of golf.

But the plaudits go to Jonathan Shannon, a very talented golfer who deserves this victory in the Coburn Cup.
