Joy for club as cup teams triumph

On Sunday, Rockmount’s Rossmore Cup team welcomed Cloverhill having drawn 2-2 at Cloverhill last week.

Team Captain Michael McCormick made some enforced changes from the first leg. Out first was father and son duo William Wilson and Reece Wilson.

William and Reece never got going and by the ninth hole they were five down. Second out was Colin Marshall and Stephen Walker. Colin and Stephen fought hard for a two hole advantage through the ninth hole.

The third pair was Neill Gowdy fresh from his honeymoon playing with Gary Gorman. Neill and Gary were the second Rockmount pair to go through the ninth two up.

Last out was gents Captain Paul Banford and regular partner Kevin. They too were two up through the ninth.

The back nine saw some changes in fortune as William and Reece, against the odds, turned their match round and secured a half. Colin and Stephen closed out their match three and two while Neill and Gary secured the overall win when they won four and two.

Rockmount’s final pair, who were two up through nine, lost on the last hole leave the overall scores 4.5-3.5 in Rockmount’s favour.

The Juniors needed to overcome a 5-2 (and eight holes down) defeat by Balmoral from the away leg.

Rockmount managed to secure victory with fine wins from the last five out of seven matches. John Dickson won seven and five against Joe Tully. Adam Douds came back from two down after nine to win four and two against Eoghan Moran. Ryan McConnell played very steady to win eight and seven against Conor Casey.

Andrew McClure, playing in this team for the first time, won six and four against Brian McAuley and final player, Matthew McMaster won five and four against Mark Shannon.

Connor Montgomery, playing number one against Liam Jennings, lost five and four and the second match featuring Jamal Dupree and Macauley Toolan was called in on the 17th hole as Rockmount had gained enough holes to secure victory.

Rockmount will now meet the winners of Shandon Park and Scrabo in the next round.
