Kane is the pick of the bunch

CITY of Derry's Alfie Kane (12) proved the pick of the bunch in this week's Sunday Society at Prehen with a fine 43 points tally that needed a back six break of tie to top the table.

In second place was John Flynn (15) who will regret the odd little slip on the back nine that kept him out of the top spot. The vastly experienced Wyn Donnell (10) calculated his way round the Prehen course to amass 41 points and take third spot.

Simon Swaby (11) had the same total but an inferior back nine saw him slip to fourth. Martin Doherty (19) will have nightmares about the poor shot at the Quarry that saw him drop shots like confetti at an Italian wedding. In the end his 40 points could only take fifth place. David Jones (19) came home in sixth spot with a 39 point tally.

With only a few outing left Clive Brolly seems to have moved into an unassailable lead with 98 points from Alfie Kane on 84 points and Eamon McCourt slipping back to third place on 82. Veteran Jack Johnstone lies in joint fourth spot with John McCormack, however it's all to play for over the last few outings.

Given the sunny weather and the reports of the course being in fabulous order the City of Derry carpark was packed to the gills on Saturday for the start of fully qualifying competitions.

By the end of the day Stuart McClelland (11) found himself at the head of the field with a fine 42 points. Dr J Stone (22) saw his 40 point tally edge out John Gallagher (15) on break of tie for second spot.

The gross prize on the day was taken by M O'Doherty (5) with a fine 73.

Members are reminded that confined Stableford competitions will continue on Saturday's until the Subscribers Cup on Saturday, April 3.

The Captain's Drive-in at City of Derry on St Patrick's Day was followed by a well attended Teams of Four Event.

Twenty-four teams vied for the honours of the day and the winning score was provided by M Jackson, T Collins, R McClay and G Gormley with a superb 97 points.

The score was all the more spectacular given the stiff cross course breeze that dominated play throughout the day.

In second place with 95 points was the team of E Heywood, G McKnight, O Lecky and A Lecky. J O'Hagan, A Kane, K Quigley and S Given took the third place with 94 points.
