Kane wins McKenna Cup

JUNIOR Irish international Matthew Kane won the McKenna Scratch Cup at Whitehead Golf Club last week (August 7).

Carding two super rounds of 68 and 73 (141), Matthew won the tournament by two shots from Fortwilliam Golf Club’s Chris Crangle 70 and 73 (143).

In a 60-strong field, Kane led from the front and controlled his golf beautifully over the par-70 East Antrim Course, even allowing himself an uncharacteristic three-putt at the last hole to win the trophy.

Matthew’s three-ball for the day comprised of Ritchie Hunter (Whitehead) and Joe Crangle (Fortwilliam), both of whom were in the prizes.

Hunter won the best nett prize with 137 and Joe took the best PM round with a score of 72.

Kane is part of a three-man Ireland under-16 team which is set to travel to Italy at the end of the month.

Result: 1st Matthew Kane (Whitehead) 141; 2nd Chris Crangle (Fortwilliam) 143; 3rd Dan Beattie (Portstewart) 145; 4th Ryan McLarnon (Fortwilliam) 145; 5th Stuart Winsby (Whitehead) 146. Best AM score - Trevor Gilliland (Knock) 72. Best PM score Joe Crangle (Fortwilliam) 72. Best nett: Ritchie Hunter (Whitehead) 137.
