Keith has four shots to spare

There were around 130 competitors, with all of them very eager to get their hands on the last medal of the year.

Keith Totten (21) had by far the best round of the day when his nett 62 rocketed him to the top of the leaderboard to leave his nearest rivals four shots adrift.

On the front nine he played pretty much to his handicap and completed this leg in 43 strokes. However he appeared to have a lot off reserve in the tank as he commenced the back nine. He secured pars on the 10th, 11th, and 12th holes to move into contention. His next par would come at the sixteenth and this was followed by a great birdie at the seventeenth to leave him at eleven under par with his handicap. He went on to sign off with a bogey on the eighteenth but had clearly done enough on this homeward leg to merit victory with his return of a nett 62

James Scullion (14) took second place with his return of nett 66. James didn’t have the best of starts when he recorded a nine at the first hole. He dug deep however and went on to complete the next eight holes in one over par and finish the front nine in 40 strokes. He kept the momentum up as he went on to record another four pars and a birdie on the back nine and finish this leg with another 40 strokes. This was a fine performance from James that merited a hard earned second place.

Desmond Skelton (9) claimed third spot with his return of a nett 66. Dessie played some great golf and was just three over par for his round. He completed the front nine in 37 strokes with the help of a birdie at the second and pars at the 5th, 6th, 7th and 9th holes. This form continued into the back nine where again he extracted two more birdies and another four pars to come home in one over par 38. The highlight of his round was a terrific birdie on the long finishing eighteenth hole.

The gross prize this week went to Matthew Madden (5) for his round of a gross 73. Eight pars on the front nine helped him to complete this leg in one over par 36. His back nine scoring was even more impressive and included a birdie at the 14th and a superb eagle at the par five 16th, which enabled him to complete this leg in level par 37.

Fourth place went to Frankie Kelly (7) with a nett 68. Frankie who is the in form man at the moment shot twelve pars and two birdies throughout the course of his round completed the course in three over par 75

Martin Boyle (7) took the fifth and final place with a nett 69. Martin completed the front nine in four over par 39. He completed the back nine in level par with the help of a birdie at the 16th, for a gross 76.

The senior’s prize this week went Frank Gallagher (17) who dropped four shots on the last two holes but still managed to come in with a nett 70.

The junior sweep competition on Saturday was won by Patrick Jordan with 30pts.

Section winners 0-12 Leonard McCann nett 69; 13-18 Brendan Lappin nett 69; 19-28 Paul Moore nett 70.

The club doubles final was played on Sunday and congratulations go to the winners, Shane O’Neill and Damian McDowell after a thrilling match in which they defeated Patrick McKeown and Conal Kerr by 5 and 4.

The Medal winners throughout the year were in a playoff also on Sunday for the Medal champion’s prize, Congratulations here goes to Shane Mulholland after he held off stiff opposition to win with a nett 68.

The last official qualifying competition The Winter Cup will be held this Saturday.

A special Charity Quiz and prize giving presentation night will take place in the Goodyear sports and social club on Saturday night commencing at 8pm. All cup and trophy winners this year should be in attendance.
