Kieran, Kevin and Declan are champion golfers

It was Champions Day when all the winners throughout the season would compete for the grand titles of Club Champion, Gross Champion and Senior Champion.

You all remember Kevin McKay and his heroics in the final of the Presidents Prize. Well, he was still in top form and he won the top prize with an excellent score of 41 points. He is now the Champion of Champions. How about that!

The honour of being the Gross Champion is the dream of all the very low handicappers in the club. This year that particular honour goes to Kieran Magennis, still one of the finest exponents of the game in Banbridge Golf Club. Kieran went round in level par gross 69.

The Senior Champion for 2012 is that wily campaigner, Declan Barry. Now Declan has had an up and down season but he came good when it mattered. His 39 points was good enough to put him into top place.

Close to 200 golfers played on Champions Day but not everyone was eligible for those special categories already mentioned. Thankfully, there were lots of other prizes to play for.

Shane Crossan (15 now 14), the beaten finalist in the matchplay championship, had the best score of the day, a magnificent 43 points. This fine young player is certainly fulfilling his potential.

The aforementioned Kevin McKay (14 now 13) was second with 41 points.

The experienced Derek Hanna (12) was third with 41 points. Four dropped shots over the last four holes cost Derek the top spot.

Garreth Moody (8 now 7), a virtual certainty to take the Golfer of The Year title this year, was fourth with 40 points.

It was a rewarding day for Kieran Magennis (5). He had a gross 69, which converts to 41 points and he won both the gross prizes on offer.

Declan Barry (8) did likewise. He won both senior prizes with his 39 points and that put the smile back on his face.

Trevor Woods (5), Brian Grimes (16) and Cecil Wilson (16) all played remarkably well and all finished with 40 points.

Walter Smyth (15), Harry Shannon (13), Barrie McCoy (13), Conrad Smyth (17), Kerry McCluskey (10), Bobby Geddis (11) and Paul Magee (11) all broke the calculated standard scratch score by one point with their 39 points.

This was another great day’s golf and it ended with the top honours going to Kevin McKay, Kieran Magennis and Declan Barry. What a trio!
