Kieran reigns in the rain during sweep

LAST week’s Wednesday Sweep at Lurgan encountered some weather problems along the way.

However those who braved the wet conditions produced some useful scoring. There were two returns of 42 points and it required the count back to sort out the issue. As a result it was Kieran Kearney’s total of 42 points that prevailed. The 12 handicapper played solid golf over the respective nines. A birdie on the ninth and pars at holes one, four, six and eight were his noteworthy scores on the outward nine. He had a minor set back with a no-return on the tenth. He then pencilled in par figures at holes twelve, thirteen and fifteen. He rounded off his golfing day with back to back birdies on holes seventeen and eighteen. This strong finish took care of the main net prize.

Runner-up with another sparkling return of 42 points was Seamus McKavanagh who made few mistakes over the eighteen holes. Indeed he had only pars or bogeys on his scorecard. Par figures at holes one, seven and eight were his key returns on the front nine. On the crucial back nine he sprinkled the card with pars at holes eleven, thirteen, fifteen and seventeen.

Third spot went to Kevin Brennan with his tidy total of 40 points. This thirteen handicapper has put together a few good scores in recent times. He played quite well on the opening nine to shoot pars at holes three, five, eight and nine. A double bogey at the sixth was his only questionable hole. He played splendidly on the inward nine. It began with a trio of pars and he closed his round with a trio of pars. In between there was a no-return on the fourteenth and a birdie on the fifteenth. This degree of consistency got him into the prizes.

The other golfers with under par scores were as follows:

40 pts: Denis McInerney.

38 pts: Andrew Gates, Terry McCrory.

37 pts: Mark O’Neill, Andy Wilson, Hugh O’Reilly, John Hartnett.

On the day only three players recorded two’s in the sweep. Both Kieran Kearney and Denis McInerney had one a piece while Ian Hamilton bagged a brace.
