Ladies hold their 50th annual friendly match

Dunmurry Ladies welcomed 16 ladies from Lisburn Golf Club to their annual friendly match, on September 19.

The match is organised by the Vice-Captains of each club and as this was the 50th anniversary for this fixture there were some special celebrations.

In 1963 the Lady Captain of Dunmurry was Mrs Irene White and Miss Evelyn Boyd was the Lady Captain of Lisburn. These two ladies played bridge together and were good friends so they decided to arrange a friendly match between the two clubs and it became an annual fixture with the venue alternating between the clubs each year.

The match is played in greensomes format with 8 fourballs teeing off. The ‘friendly’ spirit prevailed and the result was a draw with each side winning 3 matches and 2 halved matches.

Lunch followed and then Lady Captain Jean White and Paddy White, both nieces-in-law of Irene White were asked to cut the lovely 50th anniversary cake and there was a toast to the memory of the 2 founder lady captains and to the continuation of the tradition. Thanks are due to Margaret Kennedy who baked the cake and to Annmarie Lee who iced it.
