Lambeg are set to take on Rockmount in Jimmy Bruen

After qualifying for the Pierce Purcell last week, Lambeg GC have pulled off another dramatic performance in qualifying in the Jimmy Bruen.

This is a magnificent achievement from such a small club with just over 100 members, who usually struggle to select a team from the limited numbers available.

The top four out of 15 teams go through to the next round and Lambeg will now play Rockmount, who also qualified at Malone.

For Lambeg, Craig Tiffen and Tony Hamilton came in with 88, Tommy Coulter and Michael Pollins 89, John Oakes and PeterTaylor 89, Stephen Johnston and Andrew Burrell 93 and finally Ernie McAleenan and Ian Jefferson 96. With the best four scores counting, Lambeg came in fourth with 359, just 5 shots behind the leaders and hosts Rockmount.

ULSTER CUP

The Lambeg Ulster Cup team almost pulled off another shock when they went to Castlehume 4.5 to 2.5 down and were not expected to even win a match but they made the home team fight all the way and eventually went down 4-3.

Tommy Coulter and Stephen Johnston both won while Brent Eastwood and Ian Jefferson got halves.

Fred Daly

Peter Taylor (12) won his third competition of the year when he won the Fred Daly with 40pts on Saturday after a count-back.

Peter won the Lambeg Championship at the beginning of the season and the Wednesday Hat a couple of weeks ago. The only blemish on his card was a double bogey at the ninth but his back nine included six pars and a birdie.

Losing out on the countback was one of the younger members of the club, Chris Boyd (20).

Chris had a bit of a roller coaster ride with triples, doubles, pars and the odd birdie but it was the double bogey on the last which he will really regret.

At the other end of the scale, Frank Murray (15) one of the club’s more senior members, came third with a very credible score of 39 pts. Frank had a fantastic 22pts on the front nine but a no score at 10 and a double bogie at 11 pushed him back and he ended with 17 on the return. Craig Tiffen had the best gross with a 72.

The Wednesday Hat

Stephen Thornhill and Sam Thompson both finished on 40 pts but it was Stephen who took the honours after the count-back.
