Last round of Lisburn’s Winter League sees over 100 golfers out

Glenn Crookshanks, Stuart Campbell, Stephen Orr and Andrew Coulter about to tee off at Lisburn.

Once again the number of twos recorded was rather small. John Price, Martin Lilley & Andrew Parr achieved birdie twos at the 13th while Ivor Walker finished his round on a high note with a birdie at the 18th.

Despite the cold weather the competition has been well supported and the prizes will be distributed at the dinner on Friday night.

Gregory Law (11) and Andrew Parr (10) were top scorers with 21 points. They could not be separated on the last six or three holes but Gregory’s three (net two) at the final hole clinched first prize. They finished one point ahead of Stephen Stewart (9) and Martin Lilley (8).

Tommy Beattie (17) dropped strokes at the two par fives but played steadily to collect top prize in Division 2 with 20 points. Sam Moore (17) and Trevor Doak (17) finished on 19 points with Sam’s better score over the last six holes sufficient to win second prize.

Twenty points secured first place in Division 3 for Billy Hawthorne (28). David Phelan (20) managed a par three at the final hole to beat Colin Todd (24) on count back after they tied on 19 points.

The overall division results were decided on the best six cards out of eight. Rodney Osborne was the most consistent player and had no trouble winning Division 1 with 130 points. Darren Welsh was second on 125 with Andrew Parr third on 122. Andrew tied with Stephen Stewart but had the better seventh card.

Mervyn Mawhinney scored 18 points on Saturday to maintain top spot in Division 2. His total of 127 was three ahead of Stephen Wilkinson with Michael Rooney third.

Billy Hawthorne’s good score on Saturday kept him at the top of Division 3. He finished a point ahead of Mervyn Hewitt. Colin Todd and Eric Wilkinson tied for third place with Colin’s better seventh card being decisive.

The Wednesday Stableford had to be cancelled due to bad weather. Over forty competitors took part in the Sunday Stableford. Genn Crookshanks was first with 21 points. David Galway and Cecil Crawford finished one point in arrears with David taking second place on count back. Glenn along with Stuart Campbell and Tommy Beattie were the only three competitors to recorded birdie twos at the sixth. This made Glenn the ‘top money winner’. There were no twos at the fourth.
