Lennox battles through rain for Galgorm Castle victory

Intermittent showers were the order of the day as golfers set off in week 1 of the Eclectic competition at Galgorm Castle Golf Club.

In Division 1 after four Chris Cooke (5) and George Watt (4) had a one point advantage over Rod Lennox (5), Hugh Moore (6) and David Keys (4).

Through seven Cooke and Watt were joined at the front by Lennox and Keys with Moore two points behind after a double bogey at the par three
fifth.

Cooke and Lennox came home with two pars each to finish one point clear of Moore (two pars), Keys (par, bogey) and Watt (par, bogey). Lennox with a better last six took first place with Cooke second.

Denis McCarroll (8) was one point ahead of James Logan (8) in Division 2 through four with Noel McAlynn (8) another point behind.

With two to play McCarroll was joined by Logan with McAlynn closing to within one point of the leaders.

In a close finish McCarroll (bogey, par), Logan (bogey, par) and McAlynn (2 pars) finished together and with a better last six McAlynn took first place with Logan (better last six) second.

After the Niuc in Division 3 a trio of players were vying for the lead – Amarnath Dan (10), Seamus Laverty (9) and Ian Henry (10) with Hugh Mussen in close attendance one point behind.

With two to play Henry with the help of two pars and a bogey had taken a one point lead over Dan and Laverty with Mussen holding on another point down.

All four ran into bogey trouble over the closing two holes and it was a matter of who could handle it best. Henry finished bogey, double bogey and was joined by Dan (double bogey, par), Laverty (bogey, bogey) and Mussen (par, double bogey).

Mussen with a better last six took first place with Dan (better last three) second.

Steven Penney (1) won the Gross and his round included eight pars and a birdie.

Twos were recorded by: T Alexander, G Beckington, P Coleman, P Houston, D Martin, W McVeigh, H Moore, W Park, D Reilly, E Wylie and T Quinn.

BACK NINE

Brian McFall (13) held a two point advantage through thirteen over Gary Boyd (5) with Malcolm McIlroy (7) a further point behind.

McIlroy with a run of three pars joined McFall in the lead after the Grove with Boyd closing to within one point after three pars.

In another close finish McIlroy (par, bogey), McFall (bogey, double bogey) and Boyd (2 pars) finished together with McIlroy (better last six) taking first place and Boyd (better last six) taking second place.

There were three twos – B McFall, C Orr and M Burton.
