Leonard lands the Spring Cup

ONCE again the sun was shining at Silverwood golf club, but again the course was playing very long due to heavy rain on Friday.

The winner of the Spring Cup was 12 handicapper Leonard McCann with 42 points.

Leonard had 22 points on the front nine thanks to seven pars and only two bogeys at the 3rd and 7th holes and his back nine consisted of five pars at the 10th, 12th, 13th, 16th and 17th holes, with single bogeys at the remaining holes for 22 points and a total of 42 points, and it would seem that all his midweek practicing is beginning to pay off for Leonard.

In second place was seven handicapper Paul Toman with 40 points with two even nines of 20 points. On the front nine Paul had two birdies at the 7th and 9th holes four pars at 2nd 4th 6th and 8th holes and two bogeys at 1st and 5th holes, on his back nine Paul had a birdie 2 at the 12th hole and five pars at the 10th,11th,14th,16th and 17th holes and three bogeys at the 13th, 15th and 17th holes for a total of 40 points and a better back nine got Paul the second prize.

In third place it was a welcome return to the club for Martin Greene who also had 40 points, Martin had 22 points on the front nine with only two bogeys at the 1st and 2nd holes with seven pars at the remaining holes, his back nine was not as consistent with only three pars at the 11th 13th and 17th holes with single bogeys at the remaining holes for 18 points and a total of 40.

There were two gross prize’s up for grabs and the first one was won by Darren McCabe now playing off five with a gross 74 two over. Darren had a brilliant front nine of 33, two under par with two birdies at the 1st and 6th holes with the remaining seven holes all played in par but his back nine of 41 would not have pleased Darren with a double bogey at the 14th hole, single bogeys at the 10th 13th and 18th holes, one birdie at the 16th hole and the remaining holes play in par.

The second gross prize was won by Brendan Gorman playing off a four handicap with a gross 75, Brendan had a front nine of 36 with one birdie at the first hole, two bogeys at the 5th and 6th holes and the remaining holes played in par. Brendan’s back nine included one birdie at the 16th hole, three bogeys at the 12th, 14th and 15th holes and his remaining holes played in par.

The fourth prize was won by Sean McStay with 39 points with 20 of those points earned on the front nine with six par’s at 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, 9th holes, one birdie at the 3rd hole and two bogeys at the 5th and 6th holes for a one over front nine. His back contained one birdie at the 16th hole four pars at the 10th, 12th, 15th and 18th holes while the remaining four holes recorded single bogeys for 19 points a total of 39 and a solid round of golf.

The fifth prize was won by Declan McGeown again with 39 points. Declan had 21 points on the front nine with only one bogey on the fourth hole and the remaining hole’s all pars for a one over front nine. His back nine contained one birdie at the 12th hole, four pars at the 10th, 15th, 16th and 18th holes, single bogey’s at the 11th, 14th and 17th holes and a double bogey at the 13th hole.

The senior prize was won by Frank Kelly with 39 points and the junior prize was won by Eathan Headley with 38 points. The front nine prize was won by Jim haddock with 22 points and the back nine prize was won by Patrick McGeown with

20 points. There were 12 two’s this week and the next competition is the GUI Centenary qualifier.
