Lisburn can boast two presidents

ONE of the longest established fourballs in Lisburn Golf Club can now boast two presidents of Irish sporting organisations. Bobby Howard was President of the Irish Hockey Association from 1989 to 1991 and last week Ivor McCandless was elected the 65th President of the Golfing Union of Ireland at the Annual General Meeting held at Carton House.

Ivor was Chairman of the Ulster Branch from 2008 to 2011. Ivor and his wife Audrey can now looking forward to a busy schedule attending amateur golf tournaments in Ireland and abroad. The Irish Amateur Open Championship will be held at Royal Dublin in May followed by the Irish Close at Connemara in June. The Irish Boys Championships will be held on the President’s home course at the end of June.

Overseas travel will include the Walker Cup at The National Links on Long Island in September. Hopefully Ireland will have some representatives on the team.

Ivor and Audrey will also attend the four Major Championships. The highlight will be the Masters at Augusta National in April. The US Open will be played at Merion Golf Club, Philadelphia in mid June followed by the Open at Muirfield in July. Ulster’s Rory McIlroy will be trying to retain the PGA Championships at Oak Hill, Rochester in August.

In his term of office Bobby had the privilege of presenting the Irish Senior Cup to the Lisnagarvey captain Ivan Morris. Ivor hopes he can emulate his close friend with a Lisburn victory at the all-Ireland inter-club finals this year.

Lisburn members wish Ivor an enjoyable and memorable year.
