Madden tops Silverwood standings

Matthew Madden proved consistent over two days of play in the Silverwood Cup.

It provided the player with a first competition success thanks to a sub-par round on the closing day to follow on from Saturday’s 38 points.

His initial outing featured one birdie, 12 pars and five bogeys. Madden’s second round clocked up at 44 points courtesy of six birdies and nine pars by the junior convenor.

Albert Porter was runner-up following rounds of 41 and 40 - including one birdie and 11 pars across the two outings. Jim Haddock had 77 points thanks to three pars on the first day and one birdie the highlight of his second appearance.

Chris Watt collected the first gross prize on 66 - with key scores three birdies on day one and 13 pars across the final round. Kevin Munster was also a gross winner, with his 65 including an eagle, three birdies and 21 pars.

Other winners were Joseph Kelly (senior prize) on 76 points and Jack Doyle (junior prize) with 81.

The daily winners were: day one - 1, Kieran Murray 41; 2, Michael Walsh 40; junior, Dara Morgan 38; day two - 1, Barry Magee 41; 2, James Scullion 41; junior, Darragh McCann 38; front nine, Martin McCann 24; back nine, Damian McDowell 23.

In the Irish Junior Open at Killymoon, Caolan Reynolds was gross runner-up. The club seniors had Francis Kelly and Brian Brady as the leading pair on 38 points.

Edenmore’s Open Week attracted over 600 players and backing from Calor, Johnson’s Coffee, NFU Mutual Lisburn, Comco Plastics, Debenhams Rushmere, Calloway, Taylormade and Titleist. Drop-in clinics will take place each Thursday during September from 6-7 o’clock at the cost of £5 per person, with equipment provided.
