McAreavey wins following solid round on Saturday

A busy week at Roe Park saw fantastic weather and no fewer than four Stableford competitions.

Up first was a Club Stableford on Thursday and taking the victory with 39 points was Graham Forrest.

Gerard Boyd took second with 38 points and third with 37 was Gavin Logue. Taking the gross prize was Andy Young.

With the fantastic spell of weather continuing Friday saw an Open Stableford sponsored by resident PGA professional Michael McCrudden.

Up stepped Stephen Lunn fresh from a victory the previous week to shoot an unbeatable 42 points to take the win. Placing second with 39 points was Colin Harkin and third with 38 points was Ryan Magee. The gross prize was claimed by Conor Kelly. Michael chose hole number twelve for a nearest the pin prize which was gratefully claimed by Ryan Magee with a sublime iron shot to within five feet of the pin.

Saturday saw another sunny day and another Club Stableford with some fantastic prizes provided by sponsors The Market Yard. Jonathan McAreavey came away with the win after a solid round of 39 points. Mervyn Brown took second with 38 points beating young hotshot Conor McKay on countback. Andy Young played some superb golf to take yet another gross prize.

Highlight of the week was an awesome shot by Stephen Boyd which saw him ace the sixth hole. Not playing particularly well he stepped up to the tee with an 8 iron hoping just to get up on to the elevated green. Although he couldn’t see his ball he knew he had struck it well and he was delighted to find it at the bottom of the cup.

He can now expect a complimentary Boss watch as he joins the most elusive club in golf the Hole-In-One Club.

With only two weeks left in the Spring League things are certainly heating up as Sean McKeever, Neville Martin and Kieran Doherty top the table with 233 points.

The past two years has seen start to finish winners so they will certainly be under pressure to not break with tradition.

Among the chasing groups are John Holmes, Darren McVeigh, Stephen Lunn on 226 points and Stephen Boyd, Jamie Vinnicombe, Mervyn Brown close behind on 225 points.

Up next is a Club Stableford sponsored by Bonds Jewellers on Saturday. There will also be a sponsored Club Stableford on Sunday with some great prizes provided by Roe Valley Veterinary Clinic.

The Ulster Cup team will also be in action this Sunday as they travel to Hilton Templepatrick with a four point lead.
