McClay shines at Prehen

THE sun shone, the wind whispered through a few trees and Robert McClay (26) took full advantage of great scoring conditions to amass a massive 45 points to take the top prize in the Sunday Society at Prehen.

Hot on his heels, and equalling has score, was Alfie Kane (12) who took second place.

Third placed David Jones (19) will be surprised that his 42 points was not better placed, as will Eamon Maxwell (20) who finished on the same score.

Eamon has been showing up steadily in recent weeks and the handicapping committee are looking closely at every outing!

Sunday Society captain Eamon McCourt will be happy with 41 points and fifth place as it keeps him in close pursuit of the Golfer of the Year prize.

In sixth place came Malachy Armstrong (26) with a very well compiled 40 point total. Rumour has it that Malachy is so happy to have featured that he is standing his playing partners a round of drinks after the St Patrick's Day Team of Four Competition!

That kicks of after the Captain's Drive-in at 12.30pm today (Wednesday).

The time sheet is pretty packed for this shotgun start event but members will regret missing the festivities, especially since complimentary Irish Stew is included in the paltry entry fee of 5 per person.

While a good turn-out competed at City of Derry on Saturday for the confined stableford.

By the end of play it was Basil Kyle (16) who had coped best with the tricky, blustery winds to amass a winning total of 42 points. But it was only on break of tie that Basil took first from City of Derry stalwart John Gallagher (15). A double bogey at the tricky Quarry proved to be John's undoing.

In third place was Gavin Morren (20) whose fine 41 points could have been a couple of shots better had his putter been hot! Iain Anthony took the gross prize with a fine 74.

Meanwhile Robert McClay (28) landed the Harry Bryson Trophy in the Thursday Society last week. Second place, on break of tie with a better back nine, was taken by Thursday Society stalwart, the big hitting Brian Mulgrew (19) with a fine 40 points. John McCormack (16) was pipped into third place and will be ruing the double bogey at the 17th which cost him dearly.

Members are reminded that time is running out to improve their Golfer of the Year standings as the Thursday Society draws to a close on Thursday, April 1.
