McCooke edges win in Woodside Cup

Along with the Currie Cup, it is one of the two most senior trophies played for each year at Raceview.

The new name added to the trophy for 2014 is that of Charles McCooke (13) who squeezed out senior member Gerard McCann over the second nine holes.

McCooke dropped seven shots over the opening six holes but completed the front nine par, birdie, par to be six over.

After bogeying the opening two holes of the back nine, he reeled off six straight pars before finishing with another dropped shot at the last.

Second-placed McCann (17) scored five bogeys, a double bogey and three pars to be out in seven over.

The back nine opened wit ha double bogey to which he added four bogeys and four pars, only to lose out over that second nine.

Mark Surgenor, now playing off six, posted a nett score of 64 to take third nett prize, on a better last six hole total from Brian McDermott and Paddy McReynolds.

Surgenor started his round with a birdie and then had eight pars, while his back nine was comprised of four pars, four bogeys and a birdie at the last.

Brian McDermott (24) also returned a nett 64, even though his second nine contained four double bogeys but it was still enough to outdo Paddy McReynolds by two shots nett, the 14-handicapper in impressive form on the front nine where he was out in two over.

The final nett prize was won by James McBride (12) with a nett 66.

Gary Black yet again won the best gross prize with a round of one over par.

SUNDAY OPEN

Black continued his impressive form into the following day when he won the Sunday open stableford with a total of 40 points, having completed his round in two under par 66 shots.

Second nett prize was won by Blair Jamieson (8) who amassed 39 points, 22 of them on the outward nine, while Cameron Horner () won third nett with 38 points.

Black’s playing partner Michael Smyth (4) won best gross with a five over par 73.

LADIES

The final competition of the summer for lady members at Ballymena Golf Club was won by Jennifer Eagleson.

She claimed the Charity Stableford prize with 37 points to finish one ahead of her nearest rival.

The sectional prizes were won by Jacqui Reid (A with 34 points), Roisin Quigley (B with 36) and Eileen Timoney (C with 33).
