McDermott wins after close finish

THE Monthly medal stroke competition at Faughan Valley on Sunday, was played in near perfect conditions, with Cathal McDermott (14) coming out on top after a break of tie finish with 66 points.

In second spot was Lee O'Connor (8) who also scored 66 points and Bernard Kelly (3) with 67 points was third.

Last week's mid-week competiton was claimed by Alan Cheung (16) who scored 40 points and Barry Reilly (16) with 36 points was second and Christopher Nutt (12) with 35 points finished third.

The open stableford competition, which was played on Saturday was claimed Norman Woolston (23) after he finished with 38 points, a point further back in second place after a BOT finish was Patrick Tuohy (21), while also on 37 points was Eddie McColgan (16) and he claimed third spot.

The Fourball Matchplay competition has now reached the semi-final stage with A Cheung and D Boyle taking on P Duffy and D Heaney, while B Kelly and G McGlinchey face P Miller and A Gault; while the Singles matchplay competition is also at the semi-final stage with Martin Carlin coming up against Trevor Peace and Damien Boyle faces Robert Curry.

The Irons Final will be staged on Sunday, starting at 2.30pm, while the Junior Iron's Final, which also takes place on Sunday, will get underway at 2pm.

Members are also reminded the popular Captain Trevor Lewers will be hosting his Captain's Day on Saturday, August 21. A time-sheet is in operation and the presentation night, which will follow the golf, will take place at the White Horse Hotel and will start at 8.30pm.

While last Wednesday's Ladies competition was claimed by Kathleen Cooke (27) after she scored 41 points, second was Elaine Steenson (31) after scoring 40 points and Majella Heaney (36) with 39 points was third.
