McDowell had started the final round trailing then leader, Charley Hoffman by four shots.

But that all changed dramatically after a great charge by McDowell.

The Portrush man then led by a shot at one stage, but a poor putt on the final hole saw him drop back on nine-under and level with Simpson.

Simpson kept his cool - and almost snatched a dramatic last hole victory - to also finish nine under.

McDowell drove a great shot on the play-off hole and his second shot was even better, with Simpson straying right with both his drive and second.

McDowell went on to par the hole, Simpson pushing his fourth shot agonisingly wide to give McDowell the win.

The former US champion said he felt he had played nicely all week.

“You are never out of this tournament if you can hang around the top end.

“The putter had been cold on Friday, but I really got it going today. I am just glad to get over the line for my first win.”
