McGeady moves clear of the pack

THE Cable & Accessories sponsored Anniversary Open Stableford played at Foyle on Saturday had a good turnout with the competitors having to endure heavy rain and a stiff breeze making it difficult to score.

After a three way 39 points break of tie Dublin visitor Ronan Carroll (19) took top spot with Stephen Moore (15) and Declan McKinney (13) finishing second and third respectively.

The gross winner was Paul McGuigan who finished with 34 points, Greencastle’s Brian McRory (21) with 27 points won the visitor’s prize and Gary McEvoy (7) with 23 points won the back nie and Oran Harkin (23) with 35 points won the juvenile section. CSS was 34 points.

Paul McGuigan (2) produced an excellent three under par round to take top honours in the Foyle Friday Open stableford after finishing with 41 points, second was James Meehan (25) after he finished with 40 points, Kevin O’Kane (15) finished with 39 points to claim third spot and Conor McGuran (3) from Lurgan scored 35 points to win the visitor’s prize.

Last Wednesday’s Crumley Construction monthly medal Category 0-11 went to Shane Bonnar after he scored nett 64, the category 12-17 was claimed by Calvin Mooney after he finished with nett 66 and Jon McMenamin with nett 67 won the category 18+.

After 26 rounds with the 10 best scores to count in the P & L Electrics golfer of the year Cormac McGeady has taken a nine point lead with the chasing pack in close contention.

McGeady had 374 points, second is Mark McKeone with 365 points and Mark McMenamin on 364 points is currently in third spot.

While Foyle Golf Club’s, Darren Clarke Mixed Foursomes, came to its conclusion last Tuesday when finalists, Martin Loughrey and Sheila McLaughlin, Tommy Bradley and Christine McCafferty played for the Margaret Lapsley Trophy.

A very tense and exciting match resulted in Martin and Sheila taking top honours.

The competition has been played over the summer months with the following pairings winning the individual competitions - Martin Loughrey and Bridgit Edwards, Martin Loughrey and Carol Scoltock, Chris Lynch and Agnes McLaughlin, Kevin Dunn and Christine McCafferty, Cormac McGeady and Anne Hamilton.

Mr Captain Eddie Ball thanked Sheila McLaughlin and Kevin Dunn for organising the event, which raised £500 for the Darren Clarke Charity. He also thanked the sponsors and all those members who turned out in some awful weather to support a worthy charity.

Today (Wednesday) the PFS Accountants open stableford competition takes centre stage, on Friday another open stableford is down for decision, Saturday a charity open stableford competition in aid of the Foyle Hospice will be staged and on Sunday a club stableford competition is planned.
