McGlinchey claims mid-week title after super finish

AN outstanding round of 42 points from Gregory McGlinchey (11) secured the mid-week accolade this week at Faughan Valley.

McGlinchey, who showed playing partners Bee Kelly, Kevin McLaughlin and John Kelly how the game should be played, sunk a 35 foot putt at the last to claim the victory.

Second after a break of tie finish was Cycil King (13) who scored 40 points and pipped ex-Northern Ireland international John O'Neill (16) who finished in third place.

Saturday's Open stableford competition was played in near perfect conditions with City of Derry member Peter Hasson (14) with 41 points claiming top spot.

In second place was Sammy Anderson (22) who scored 40 points and Tony P Griffiths (13) with 39 points was third. The Monthly Medal was won by Owen McGuinness with nett 65, second was Brendan Carton after he scored nett 66 and Arthur McGinley finished in third spot with nett 70.

Captain Trevor Lewers' charity day had a big entry with over 130 taking part for a very worthwhile cause in glorious conditions; over 2,000 was raised on the day with all proceeds going to Breast Cancer Awareness Anderson House.

All competitors had to wear something pink but best dressed on the day was local milk man David Kilgore, as picked out by the Lady Captain Margaret Armstrong.

The golf on the day was won by the in-form Ernie Killen (18) with a great score of 46 points, second place after a break of tie finish went to Damien Boyle (20) after he scored 43 points and Raymond Curley (21) also on 43 points was third.

Newtownstewart member Arnie Russell (17) with 40 points won the visitors' prize. Non GUI members winner was Lee O'Connor who scored 40 points and second was Ernie Campbell who scored 36 points.

In the ladies section Margaret Armstrong (24) with 40 points was first and Kathleen Cooke (30) with 39 points was second, with Ryan Godfrey (13) on 33 points claiming the junior section.

Mr Lewers would like to thank all who took part and a special thanks to all the sponsors on the day and the ladies who provided refreshments.

Meanwhile the Ladies Midweek competition was won after a BOT finish by Maureen Sayers (28) after she scored scored 38 points, second was Kathleen Cooke (30) and in third spot was Eileen Robb (18) who finished with 36 points; members are also reminded that a time-sheet will be in operation for Margaret Armstrong's Captain's Day on Saturday.
