McHugh in sparkling form

Robin, playing off fifteen, accumulated 23 points at the turn, and made birdie two’s at the 10th and 13th on his way to adding a further 22 points over the back nine holes.

Second place on Sunday went to Jonathan Blair, playing off nine, who made birdies at the 3rd and 5th holes in a one over par round which yielded 44 points. Mel Carleton made birdies at the 2nd, 5th, 8th and 18th holes on his way to a level par round which put him in third place with 43 points.

There were no holes-in-one for Michael Dallat this weekend, but he did manage to record 41 points on Sunday to be placed fourth with Danny Taggart carding a birdie at the final hole to finish in fifth place, also with a score of 41 points.

Conditions were tricky in the Monthly Medal competition on Saturday, with a strong breeze making scoring awkward. Mervyn Arbuthnot coped with the conditions best as the fourteen handicapper returned a nett 67 to finish in first place ahead of Liam Gallagher on count-back.

Raymond Browne, winner of the back nine prize in Edgar Dornan’s Captain’s Day last weekend, put together decent front and back nine’s this week to finish in third place overall with a nett 68.

Fourth place in the Medal went to Niall Hill, with Allan McCook finishing in fifth after both golfers returned nett 68’s. Saturday’s gross prizes went to Owen Kennedy and Michael Dallat jnr with scores of 74 apiece.

Ryan McKay, spurred on by winning the Junior prize on Captain’s Day, recorded 43 points on Wednesday to win the Open stableford competition. Second place went to Sean McCormick, also with 43 points, Martin Morgan was third with 42, Enda Kennedy, a scratch golfer from Rossapena, was six under par in his round to finish fourth and Harry Sheehan won the fifth prize also with a score of 42 points.

The Silver Mounted Golf Ball competition commenced in mid-April with 32 pairs qualifying for the match-play stages and the tournament reached its conclusion last week with the pairing of Peter McMullan and Owen Kennedy getting the better of James McCaughan and Colum Egan by a score line of 3&1 in Monday’s final.

It’s proved to be a successful few days for Owen Kennedy as he’s also jumped into the lead in this year’s Golfer of the Year competition with just three events to go. By collecting fifteen points courtesy of a sixth place finish in the Medal on Saturday, Owen now has accumulated a total of 79 points, six ahead of Patrick Dallat jnr in second with Patrick Campbell and James McNeill tied in third place on 69 points.

The situation is far more clear cut in the Winchester Challenge Bowl competition with Francis McGinn holding a massive 34 point lead over second placed Owen Kennedy with Michael Dallat jnr moving ahead of his brother Patrick into third place in the standings.

The next event to count towards the Golfer of the Year and Winchester Bowl will be the Brass Putter stroke competition, sponsored by Club Professional Damien McEvoy, on Saturday 27th August.

Sunday’s competition will be an Open Stableford, traditionally held on the Sunday prior to the start of the Ould Lammas Fair in Ballycastle-O!
