McKeegan wins at Prehen

THE Club Stableford competition at City of Derry on Sunday was won after a break of tie finish by Stephen McKeegan (7) after he scored 38 points, second following a BOT finish was Alfie Kane (10) and Richard Burton (15) also scored 38 points to claim third spot.

While John Lewers (14) who has just recently joined Prehen and now has the distinction of winning the inaugural Centenary Monthly Medal (Gold) competition (specially struck to mark City of Derry’s founding in 1912) with a marvellous score of 42 points on Saturday in less than ideal conditions. These medal competitions will be played throughout the season as advertised.

The silver medal on this occasion went to P J McGee (14) who had 39 points and the bronze medal was taken by Malachy Armstrong (28) who also had 39 points losing out on a tie break. Stephen McKeegan (7) took the gross prize on 31 points.

All players with scores of 32 points or better also earned valuable points in the Order of Merit table sponsored by City of Derry Building Society.

Members are reminded that double Order of Merit points are on offer next week in the Club Championship Qualifying competition. If you’re not in you can’t win.

City of Derry’s Thursday Open has once again proved very popular to both members and visitors with over eighty of them taking to the fairways.

There were two superb scores of 41 points with eventual winner Eddie Maxwell’s (12) back nine of 21 points proving decisive. Tom McClintock (12) made a welcome return to the podium losing out to Eddie on the tie break. Ralph Hamilton (14) finished in third place with 40 points. The gross prize winner was Lester Moore (2) with a score of 70 and Ballyliffin member Oscar Mailey (6) took home the visitor’s prize with 35 points.

Thursday Opens run right through until October with visitors more than welcome. Bookings can be made through the club’s website

While the Faughan Valley Ladies competition last Wednesday was won by Elizabeth Mullan (27) after she scored 36 points. Elizabeth also had a hole in one at the 16th hole.

Second was Jackie McNulty (33) who finished with 35 points and Nadine Lynch 34 points was third.

Meanwhile at Redcastle despite the heavy showers and heavy conditions a credible 39 points from John Kane (14) was enough to clinch victory in Club Confined competition at the weekend, following a break of tie finish.

Second was Kevin McQuaid (11) who also scored 39 points, third spot also a BOT finish went to Paul Hegarty (18) who scored 38 points.

The front nine was won by Martin Agnew with 21 points. John Comie won the back nine after a BOT finish with 20 points. Gavin Doherty (7) won the gross prize with 30 points.
