The 17 year-old became the first female golfer to represent Ireland in an Olympic event and, coming in tied 20th in the singles and 27th alongside Kevin Le Blanc in the team event, she returned home with her head held high.

In the singles, a disappointing final round 79 dropped Olivia down the rankings and the Ireland pair never really got going in the team event.

However, the once in a lifetime trip to Nanjing, China, was given a boost when Olivia got the chance to carry the Ireland flag into the closing ceremony.

“I was thrilled to be chosen as Flag Bearer and very proud to represent my fellow Team Ireland athletes at the Closing Ceremony,” she said.

Ireland’s Chef de Mission Martin Burke said: “Mehaffey has been a great asset to the overall team during the Games as an individual performer and within the team context.”
