Memorial action for golfers at Raceview

There was a double option in competition at Ballymena Golf Club on April 12 with the Frank Gribben Memorial and Adrian Gribben memorial events.

The Adrian Gribben result saw Donald Smyth (16) lead the way with a return of nett 63 and, as has happened so often, he had to depend upon a better second nine, where he edged out Noel Kidd (13) by one shot.

Category one saw Richard Campbell (7) top the scoring with a nett 65, while category two went to John V Graham (13) with a winning nett score of 66.

A recent new member, David Black (15), came up trumps in category three with a nett 63, while William Owens (21) took the category four prize where he played to his handicap, returning a nett score of 68.

The best gross card came from Gary Black who played the course in 70 shots.

FRANK GRIBBEN MEMORIAL

The top 16 qualifiers in the Frank Gribben Memorial Trophy were: Gerald MacParland, John Lorimer, John V Graham, John Bartley, George B McCrea, Ian Lecky, Millar Eagleson, Mervyn Whiteside, Roy Warwick, James McClintock, Erwin Redmond, Martin McClintock, Brian Dempster, Rodney Armstrong, James McCloy, Jim Wylie.

WEDNESDAY OPEN

The Wednesday open stableford on April 9 saw Kieran McGaughey (13) and Derek Francey (12) each record 37-point totals with McGaughey having the better second nine total of 17 points against Francey’s 15.

The Sunday open stableford on April 13 resulted in William McCartney (18) winning with a total of 42 points.

Second nett was George Horner (13) who accumulated 40 points.

The best gross came from Jonathan Law (3) who played a total of 71 shots for the 18 holes.

INTER-CLUB

The inter-club competition season got underway with the JB Carr Diamond Trophy and the Ballymena team exited the competition by one game away to Rathmore.

Gillian Fraser was the winner of last week’s ladies’ event as she accumulated 39 points in The Heat Stableford Tournament to finish two clear of her nearest rivals Jacqui Reid, who claimed the runners-up spot courtesy of a better back nine from Barbara Totten.
