Michael wins Rockmount Seniors contest

Including the Rockmount Junior team, fourteen clubs participated in this annual competition. As tradition the host club went out first and set a very high standard; their total from four cards amounted to 157. This score remained the best score throughout the day; Clandeboye Golf club finished second with 151 points and Malone Golf third with 150 points. The best gross on the day was a one over par 73 by Connor Pimm from Mourne Golf Club and the best stableford score was by Luke McCaughan who scored 46 points.

The DCC Energy (EMO Oil) stableford competition on Saturday July 20 was played in the continuing glorious sunshine. Michael Dunlop (21) was first with 42 points beating Neil Coburn (17) into second place. The low section (0 -11) was won by Ryan Wilson (07) with 38 points, the mid-section (12 – 17) was won by Gavin Toman (16) who scored 40 points and the high section (18 – 28) was won by Rodney Allen (22) who scored 41 points. Best gross on the day was from Colin McClenaghan (02) who had a level par gross score of 72. Colin’s card included three birdie two’s at the 9th, 12th and 16th holes.

The prestigious Seniors Championship playoff was played on Sunday July 21; the participants having qualified earlier in the season. After nine holes the leading card was from Al McCune who completed the front nine in 35 for two under par. His nearest challenger’s at this stage were Michael Stewart on 38 and John Curley on 39. On the second nine things changed. Al played well but could not repeat his feats of the front nine; on the second nine Al scored six over par for a total of 76. Michael matched his front nine 38 with a three over par total of 38 and an eighteen hole total of 76 beating Al on a better back nine. This was the second year in a row Michael won the Seniors Championship. Peter O’Hara was third with a total of 82 and John Curley secured the prize for the best nett score with 69. Also on Sunday the Ulster four-ball entertained Enniskillen Golf Club in the second leg of their fourth round match. With a lead of three matches to two from the away leg, the Rockmount team knew they could not be complacent. With Rockmount in an unassailable position the team Captain’s agreed to call in the remaining matches. The Rockmount team go into the quarter finals and will play Rossmore.
