Mullan family win Norman Caldwell Trophy

Pat Mullan, ably abetted by his son Matthew, won the Norman Caldwell Trophy over the Dunluce links on Saturday with a score of 49 points.

The duo opened their round with a sequence of birdie, birdie, par, birdie and added another birdie with a four at the ninth to have 24 in the bag at the turn. Better was to follow with ten and eleven being birdied, then a wee rest before grabbing a trio of birdies at fifteen, sixteen and seventeen for an additional 25 points to boost the total to 47 for a two point victory.

Richard McDermott and Andrew Baird teamed up to score 47 points for second place. A nice two at the third and a three at eight were contained in the 24 points won on their way out. This matched the winner’s front nine total but a double bogey six at thirteen proved costly. Even with another birdie, three at fifteen, 23 points were all that could be squeezed from the inward nine and this was two short of the top spot.

Over the last six they proved the better team in the countback stakes with Sid Henry and Edward Cassells being moved into third place with the same score of 47 points. With birdied logged at 3,5,7 and 9 they too had 24 points at the turn but their birdie four at ten proved to be their last and came too early in the tie break to be of use and third spot was the result.
