New Year’s Honour for Royal Portrush manager

There was more celebrations for Royal Portrush this week following the news Wilma Erskine-Heggarty was among five Northern Ireland sporting recipients of the British Empire Medal.

The Club secretary and manager was named among sporting figures in the New Year Honours List.

Mrs Erskine-Heggarty, who was awarded the BEM for her services to Northern Ireland Tourism and Golf, told Times Sport she was delighted with to receive the honour.

“It was a fantastic surprise,” Wilma said.

“I received the letter about four weeks ago, but of course I couldn’t say anything until the official announcement had been made.

“I’m absolutely delighted, it’s a great recognition for the club and for the work put in to golf in Northern Ireland.”

Wilma also revealed preparations for The Open are stepping up.

“Things were quiet over the Christmas period but they are heating up now,” said Wilma.

“We have just submitted plans to Coleraine Council, which hopefully will be passed.

“If successful everything will take a massive step forward and the R&A will be in the position to announce a date for the staging of The Open Championshionship at Royal Portrush.

“It really is an exciting period for everyone at the club.”

Graeme Beatt, has recently taken over as course manager from the long serving Joe Findlay.
