Nicholl comes out on top at Roe Park

ROE Park Golf Captain Noel McClarey welcomed members and guests to his Captain's Day, on Saturday.

The course proved a good test of golf in the windy conditions with some well known competitors among the winners on the day. On a difficult day for scoring it fell to a seasoned campaigner to stride home three points clear of his nearest competitor.

Derek Nicholl, known to many as 'Tex', Limavady Printing Company's second best golfer, scored heavily throughout the day with a 44 point total, the envy of many.

This was Tex's 17th attempt at winning the premiere competition of the year and many throughout the club will be aware of the work he has put in to get his handicap high enough to allow him to do so.

The quiet man himself, Steven Boyd, who always enjoys the Captain's Day out, had particular reason to celebrate with a fine showing in second place on 41 points, whilst Martin McVeigh secured the third spot with 40 points. The pick of the Seniors was not far off the pace either, with Martin Mullan's 39 points good enough to earn him the Seniors' prize.

Rose McGuigan won the Ladies Prize whilst Donald Forrest strode ahead of the distinguished company of former Captain's to claim the Hamill Memorial Trophy.

The Nearest the Pins on the day were won by: 3rd Stephen Boyd, 6th Michael Mullan, 9th Donald Forrest, 12th Liam McClarey, 17th Darren Mullan.

The leading Committee member on the day was William Scott, with Martin Rafferty the first among equals of the Captain's Guests. Dr Gerry Byrne took home the first nine award with 22 points whilst Joe O'Neill had a bumper 25 points on the back nine. Darren Mullan proved the strongest among the low handicappers with a gross 33 points.

The only disappointing note of the weekend was a stiff defeat for Derek Simpson's Ulster Fourball team during their away leg against Foyle. The side were on the wrong end of a 5-0 reversal and will face a stiff test to overcome this in the home leg.

Captain Noel would like to extend his thanks to everyone in the Radisson complex, in particular, green keeper Mr McIlroy, and the membership of Roe Park Golf Club who made the day such a success for all involved and thoroughly enjoyable for himself.
