No catching Sheena as she posts best card of the year

Sheena McStay won the ladies competition this week at Lurgan with the best score of the year, nett 68.

Sheena obviously was tired of finishing second best to her playing partner, May Baxter, and she showed her intention to overtake May from the very start, with a birdie at the first.

This was followed swiftly by 7 pars in the next 11 holes and at that stage there was no catching her even with a few mishaps on the way in, so congratulations to Sheena.

The gross prize was a tightly contested affair with Christine Hagan just beating Sian Mulholland on the better back nine by recording a fine 40 strokes on the homeward run.

It’s great to see Christine and Sian playing their way into form with the team matches fast approaching.

Section one went to Fiona Cummins with a nett 70. No doubt Fiona is picking up a few tips from the other stars in her household and had a nice first 9 of 40 shots but the wheels while maybe not coming completely off, certainly wobbled on the way home and she did well to keep her score together.

Section 2 went to Eileen McCann with a nett 74. This gives Eileen a hat-trick of prizes in the last three weeks so well done to Eileen she certainly is off to a quick start in the early stages of the season. Section 3 went to Ita Hanna with a nett 72 and she just pipped Ursula Dummigan on the better back 9.

A quick look at Ita’s card shows that she played the par 3’s well this week and that laid the foundations for her score. Ita played great golf last season and all indications are that she is intending to improve on it again this year.

The 9 hole prize went to Elaine Bell.
