No one can stop Johnstone

THE sun shone, the wind died down, it was a very pleasant day for golf. In fact it was so pleasant that even the temperature challenged felt they could venture outside to sample the spring sunshine, at City of Derry.

On the day Prehen witnessed the biggest stableford score of the year to take a competition when veteran Jack Johnstone (24) rolled back the years with a superb 45 point total. Nothing could stop JJ as he tamed both halves of the course with 23 and 22 points respectively.

Eamon Maxwell (20) found that his 43 points, normally good enough to take a competition, was only sufficient for second place.

Third place went to John McCormack (16) with a fine 41 point tally but it took a break of tie to separate John's 41 points from that of Emmet Boyle (19) and Alastair Crockett (12) who had to be satisified with fourth and fifth place respectively.

In hindsight, Mr Crockett will be very pleased with his weekend's work having taken second in Saturday's Stableford Competition. Sammy Smallwoods will be getting a Crockett bonus if this form continues!

Sixth place was taken by Clive Brolly (16) with a fine 40 points.

With the course in splendid condition and receptive greens scoring was high at City of Derry Golf Club in the Saturday Stableford.

When the sun eventually set on the spectacular views over the River Foyle Jim McDaid (17) found that his 43 points was enough to capture first place. Jim's steady play on the front nine to amass 20 points set a great foundation but his birdie three at the 10th powered him to a further 23 points on the back nine.

Beaten into second place with 43 points but an inferior back nine was 12 handicapper Mr W A Crockett. Malachy Doherty (21) taught everyone else a lesson and his 42 point tally was good enough to capture third place on a break of tie. Iain Anthony (4) took the gross prize with a fine 75 shot total.

Meanwhile members are reminded that the Captain's Drive-in takes place on St Patrick's Day at 12.30pm and will be followed by a Shotgun Start Teams of Fours event. Team Entry forms are available from the Proshop at City of Derry Golf Club and need to be returned very soon to ensure aplace.
