Olivia proves she’s one of the best at Vagliano Trophy

The 17 year-old picked up two points from her four matches but couldn’t prevent her Great Britain and Ireland side from falling to a 12.5 - 11.5 loss to Continental Europe at Malone Golf Club.

“It was such an amazing week,” said the upbeat +4 handicapper. “I played really well this week and really upped my game I think.

“I played against the British Amateur champion and the beaten finalist and it was great to see that I was right up there with them.”

Olivia, with the help of world number one Leona Maguire, had even seen off British champion Celine Boutier and her partner Justine Dreher three and two on Friday morning.

The result helped the host side to a 2-2 draw in the first session before Olivia tied with British beaten finalist Linnea Strom.

Facing a one point deficit heading into the final day, Olivia’s side needed a big performance.

Olivia and her partner Leona Maguire did manage to pick up half a point on Saturday morning but the local girl was edged out one down after 18 in the singles, the British champion getting her revenge and ensuring a fifth successive win for Europe.

“The whole team knew it was a big task going into the final day and we all went out fighting,” said Olivia.

“We were all gutted to get beaten by just one point but it was amazing to play in a home venue and the support and people watching was overwhelming. It’s a week I definitely won’t forget.”

It was Olivia’s biggest team competition to date, next up a quest to make the team for next year’s Curtis Cup, to be played in Ireland at Dun Laoghaire.
