A rather mundane 18 points over the first nine gave no indication of the fireworks to follow, he dropped only one shot to par on that stretch for a massive 23 points and victory by one point over Trevor Heywood (21) who was a model of consistency scoring 20 points on each nine to secure his prize.

No less than five players battled it out for third place with David Smyth (13) taking the honours on the count back with 22 of his 39 points total coming on the vital second nine.

Spare a thought for Prehen’s oldest competitive golfer Bert Whoriskey (16) who was one of the quintets on 39 points but still managed a reduction in handicap and now plays off fifteen at the grand old age of 83.

Aaron Taylor (2) took the gross prize with his 35 points and we must mention Ben Leonard (7) who scored 37 points, an unremarkable score normally but Ben blanked the first four holes so 37 points for 14 holes over the long layout is surely a club record.

Meanwhile City of Derry’s popular weekly Thursday Open Stableford once again is attracting players from far and near and with Prehen in superb condition they are getting great value.

Arthur McMemamin (19) survived a break of tie to claim first place this week, his better back nine getting him the verdict over the fast improving Mark Sheridan (18) with both players recording a fine 40 points. Rodney Smyth (21), the current Thursday Society Golfer of the Year is determined to maintain his superb winter form into the summer, his 39 points securing the third spot. Francis Mallon (22) came all the way from Kilrea Golf Club to win the visitor’s prize with a fairly modest 33 points and the gross prize was taken by Ernie Heywood (0) on 37 points. The Thursday Opens run right through until October and as usual tee times can be booked through (028) 71311496 or online at www.cityofderrygolfclub.com.
