Orr wins after close finish at Prehen

STEPHEN ORR (14) had a three point winning margin in the weekly Thursday Open at City of Derry.

A well compiled 41 points gave him the verdict over Kealan Quigg (sr) who was once again in top form cementing his position as the outstanding golfer at the club, he was round in level par gross and 38 points.

Seamus Given (17) finished in third place on 37 points and Gary McAvoy (13) playing out of Foyle Golf Club took the visitor’s prize on 34 points.

While the Ladies PGA Tankard competition was played in near perfect conditions last Tuesday at Prehen.

Coming out on top was Vivienne Houston (7) after she scored 40 points, second was Betty McBride (18) who finished with 38 points and Cheryl Chambers (19) with 36 points was third.

The front nine was claimed by Rosie Shortt (25) after she scored 18 points and Rosaleen McAnulla (21) also with 18 points won the back nine.

Meanwhile at Redcastle the Ladies Branch Open Day held on Monday, May 20 and sponsored by Redcastle Hotel, saw a good turn out, play super conditions. Taking home first prize was Portstewart member Hazel Browne (19) who finished with 41 points, second spot went to Gena Porter (20), while Rosie Agnew (18) with 36 points was third.

The gross winner was Jennie Flanagan (14) after she scored 21 gross points and Buncrana member Margaret Armstrong (30) with 31 points claim the visitors prize.

The front nine was won by Una Morrison who scored 17 points and Oonagh McDermott with 18 points claimed the back nine prize. Nearest the pin was Hazel Browne and Jennie Flanagan hit the longest drive and the men’s nine hole competition was won by Billy Harkin after he scored 17 points.

While the eighth year of the Maiden City Celebrity golf day took place on Friday at the Foyle Golf Centre. The prizes went to Teams First - John Fahy’s Solicitors. Individual prizes went to Best Celebrity - Mike Newell (Former Blackburn Rovers/Everton striker); Longest drive - Saul Deeney (Derby County keeper) and Nearest the pin was Tommy Bradley.
