Paddy is the deserving winner at Banbridge

Paddy Grimes was the winner of the Ross Thompson Fuels sponsored golf competition last Saturday.

It was a beautiful day and the course was in pristine condition so, it is not surprising that there was a spate of good scores. With one exception, all the prizewinners scored 40 points or better.

Paddy Grimes (16) was the winner with 43 points, the equivalent of a nett 62. Paddy played really well up to long par 5 fourteenth hole. He took 7 shots there and must have felt that his chance of victory was slipping away. He settled himself and played the tricky last four holes in only one over par. He was a deserving winner.

John Bell (6) was runner-up with 42 points. He had an incredible start, 3 under par after 4 holes. He went round in level par, gross 69. If it wasn’t for a dropped shot at the 17th, he would have won.

Malcolm Russell (9) won the low section with 41 points. Jonathan Shannon (5), the Senior Cowdy captain, was runner-up with 39 points.

Dennis Watt (17), inspired by his playing partner John Bell, won the middle section with 42 points. Like John, the 17th cost him dearly.

Benny McConville, with 41 points, was delighted with his second place finish.

Aaron Buchanan (20), whose 42 points was only one point off the leader, had to be content with winning the high section. Joe McGivern (21) was second with 41 points.

Neil Clydesdale (6) won the best gross prize with a steady 71. The prize for the best senior player went to Philip Strong (22) with 40 points.

The hard luck story belonged to Robert Canning (18). He was the only player to score 40 points and go home empty-handed. The players are all running into good form with Captain’s Day coming up this Saturday.
