Penultimate week for Rockmount Winter League

THE penultimate week of qualifying for the match-play stages of the winter league commenced on Saturday; with first and second places in all the leagues up for grabs.

On a cool but still Saturday morning, scoring was well below expectation only eleven players did manage to score better than level par.

Thomas Mearns (11) was the out-right winner with a score of 29 points. Second, third and fourth all scored 28 points with places decided on count back. Christopher Robinson (9) was second, Leslie Anderson (11) was third and Charlie Lally (11) was fourth. In fifth place was John Bell (7) who scored 26 points. Four handicapper Frank Wallace had the best gross of the day despite a double bogey seven on the second hole; Frank recorded three birdies, seven pars and one other bogey for a level par round of 48 shots.

Only one week remains until the top two teams in each league are finalized and entered into the quarter finals; all points gained at this stage are vital. In league A, ‘Handcuffed to an Idiot’ 877 have opened up a twenty point gap on second placed team, ‘Reece’s Wonders’ 857 with ‘Anything but Hockey’ 853 a further four points behind. In possibly the most clear cut league B, ‘This is Madness’ have 887 and ‘Oggie and the Sprinkler Heads’ in second have 871 with the nearest challengers ‘Fun Time With The Likely Lads’ 847 in third some 24 points behind second. League C is a bit tighter; ‘Life without Brian’ have 876 and team ‘TBA’ have 863. The tightest league is league D, the one-time runaway leaders ‘Frankly Awful’ have 872 and drop to second place the new leaders in league D are ‘Shanksville Duffers’ who have 876, ‘Is Betty Real’ are third with 864 points. The scores take into account the four dropped scores.

In the singles competition’s (0-13) section; Paul Mearns 289 leads Ryan Wilson 285 by four points, Peter Brown 283 is third. In (13.1-18.5) section, Competition Secretary Frank Wallace 286 has a three point lead on William Blythe 283, Stephen Gilmore 279 is a close third; in the (18.6-28) section Robert Burns 280 is first Arthur Holywood on 277 is second and John McGrath third on 276. Next week the penultimate round of scores will be added to the above team and individual scores.
