Pierce Purcell eventfirst for Silverwood

This is one of the premier Golfing Union of Ireland’s competitions and for the first time in the club’s history will be held at the Silverwood course with thirteen clubs from around the area participating in the first stage of the event.

The meeting was held to finalise the plans between Craigavon Borough Council and Silverwood Golf Club for this event which will take place on Sunday 11th May.

Mayor Mark Baxter said, “Council works well with the members of Silverwood enhancing the course not just for club members but for everyone who wishes to make use of this excellent leisure facility. We are privileged to have the vast array of leisure facilities within the Borough and are continually encouraging all our citizens to make use of them throughout the year”.

He went on to say that this competition is recognition of the joint efforts of both Craigavon Council and Silverwood Golf Club to raise the profile of the Borough.

The club Captain added, “We are excited to be hosting this competition for the first time and feel the good working relationship we have built up over the past years with the staff of Craigavon Council has borne tangible results.”

He went to say plans are l advanced between the Club and Craigavon Council to ensure the course will be in the best condition possible for the event and with the required administrative support in place will ensure the competition runs smoothly.

These sentiments were echoed by the other club representatives who said all of the club members are looking forward to this premier event coming to Silverwood and that it will be only one part of the planned events which will take place to mark the Club’s 30th Anniversary.

With the continuing inclement weather conditions the scheduled club competition had to be changed to an ordinary club competition on Saturday.

The winner with 43 points was Leonard McCann, he had a great round of 75 gross with a level par front nine with two birdies and two bogeys for 23 points. His back nine contained six pars and three bogeys at the 10th 15th and 16th holes for 20 points and his total of 43 points.

In second place was Colm Doyle with 42 points, he had 19 points on his front nine with four pars, four single bogeys and one double bogey.

His back nine of 23 points included one birdie, four pars with the remaining holes played in one over par.

Third with 42 points was Eamon Doherty who had 22 points on his front nine with two birdies, four pars, two bogeys one double bogey. His back nine contained five pars and one double bogey and three single bogeys.

The gross prize was collected by the new junior convener Matthew Madden with an excellent level par 72.

Matthew would like all the juniors in the club to attend the junior coaching sessions starting on Thursday the 17th April at the driving range between 6pm-7pm.

Fourth prize went to Jeff Conway with 41 points.

Jeff had 20 points on the front nine and 21 points on his back nine.

5th prize was won by Brian Mc Shane with 41 points; he had 22 points on the front nine and 19 points on his back nine.

The senior prize was picked up by Maurice Mc Cluskey with 37 points.
