Prehen’s open week

PREHEN’S 40th open week a keynote part of the Club’s centenary celebrations starts this Saturday with the McFeeley Open Cup followed by Long’s Supermarket Ladies and Gents Open on the Sunday.

The Everglades Hotel is the sponsors of Monday’s Open and that competition also has a special section for the ladies. On Tuesday, May 29 the River Inn Bar & Restaurant Ladies Open takes centre stage, while next Wednesday the Kelly Fuels Open is up for grabs.

Meanwhile on the course last week the second of the Centenary medal competitions being played to mark the club’s 100th anniversary was played on Sunday and Malachy Armstrong (27) took home the Gold medal with a finely compiled 40 points. Aaron Taylor (2) only needed a par at the last hole to take the title but a poorly struck second shot left him taking a bogey five which cost him dearly and he had to settle for the silver medal. Robert Leckie (11) was best of a trio on 39 points wth his 22 points on the back nine earning him the bronze medal.

While Aidan Devine (12) clocked up his second win in as many weeks when taking premier position in the Cecil Thompson (Plumbing and Heating) sponsored Open at Prehen on Saturday. His 41 points left him two clear of Frank McCauley (27) who was delighted to be on the podium again after a long absence. His superb 24 points on the back nine gave him the second prize over Jamie Hope (10) on a count back and John Hancock (16) who finished third and fourth respectively. Ernie Heywood (2) took the gross prize on 34 points and the nines went to Trevor Heywood (21) who took the first nine with 19 points on a tie break and Ken McClintock (20) was the back nine winner with 23 points.

Meanwhile a smaller than usual entry this week owing to the inclement weather but that didn’t detract from the scoring and Lester Moore (1) proved that emphatically by going round in 67 shots (a four under par back nine of 31) for a 41 points winning total. Kevin Quigg (4) took the runner up spot with 38 points.
