Pro-am launched at Prehen

THE 2012 City of Derry Pro-Am was launched on Wednesday and not only will the competition be one of the biggest events in the club’s centenary celebrations, it will also be supported by one of the North-West’s top sports beneficiaries, Billy Henderson.

The event’s new sponsor has added golf to his portfolio of local sports sponsorship and his help will ensure one of the top Pro-Am’s in the country goes from strength to strength.

Down the years, the City of Derry Pro-Am has been acknowledged as one of the finest events of its kind on the PGA Irish region calendar, and yet again this year it’s likely to prove very popular, not just for local golfers, but for some of the top professionals in the country.

Among the top players who have featured in this event down the years are former Ryder Cup player Philip Walton and current European Tour member Damien McGrane. Add to those players of the calibre of former British Amateur Champion Brian McElhinney, local professional Michael McGeady, and Damien Mooney, David Higgins and Simon Thornton and it highlights the calibre of the event hosted at the Prehen course.

It’s also a massive few days for local amateurs who have for years enjoyed the company of the professionals and the competitive rivalry which the team event brings.

This year’s event will again draw many of the country’s top professionals to City of Derry for an event which will take place over the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, 21st and 22nd July.

There are many reasons for the success down the years of the City of Derry Pro-Am, not least the warm welcome of all associated with the club to its visitors. Down the years many stories have been etched into the memories of our visitors and hopefully more will be written this year.

And its with such a reputation that Billy Henderson Properties Limited has decided to support such a wonderful event.

Speaking at the launch of the Pro-Am, Mr. Henderson said: “When I was asked to consider getting involved in such a prestigious tournament, which is recognised as one of the best throughout the country, I had little to ponder.

“Down the years I’ve always acknowledged the calibre of the event and the benefits it brings not just to the golfing fraternity, but to the city as a whole. I had now hesitation in supporting the event and hopefully it will continue to flourish,” he said.
