£300k investment at Mallusk golf course

City of Belfast Golf Club, once described by the late Fred Daly as having the potential of becoming one of the finest short courses in Ireland, is building for the future.

The Mallusk club is investing more than £300,000 of its funds in building a modern, fit-for-purpose clubhouse.

The new clubhouse will replace the existing 25-year-old prefabricated structure at the Antrim Road course. The project will also involve the construction of a greenkeepers’ store, extended car parking and landscaping.

Club President, Mr Peter Long said: “The new clubhouse development shows our commitment to providing quality, value for money golf for the community of greater Belfast, Newtownabbey and beyond. Hopefully this investment in our facilities will attract more members and visitors to the club, which has a proud past and now a brighter future.”

The project has been made possible after the club secured a 21-year lease for the course, which is owned by Belfast City Council.

Construction of the new clubhouse, which is being carried out by QMAC, is expected to be completed by October.

Outgoing club captain, Mr John Clarence, said the club is delighted to be progressing the ambitious project following years of planning and negotiations.

“In this time of great economic uncertainty what has been secured by astute financial planning and strategic resolve has enabled a dream to become a reality,” he commented.

“The foundations have been poured and building work is under way, and we are looking forward to moving in to our new clubhouse later this year.”

Mr Long continued: “We are all convinced that the struggle over the years to raise money has been worth the effort. Thanks to all our members past and present for sharing in the dream.

“The membership of City of Belfast Golf Club has been increasing over the past few years, and hopefully this development will help us attract more members and visitors and the club will go from strength to strength in the years to come.”
